The Perfect Desk...
About a month ago, I decided it was time to part ways with my desk I had been using for about four years. It got me through my college years and had served its purpose. It was a large curved desk with multiple shelves and drawers. As of late it had become a place just to store junk I didn't use or need. I found myself not wanting to work at my desk anymore because of the clutter. After watching Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things, I decided I wanted a desk that was more simple and could hold just what I needed.
After doing some research, I decided to start looking at local furniture stores. I looked through several different stores, but I just wasn't finding what I had in mind. I wanted a simple desk with a natural wood top and black legs. I finally found what I was looking for on Etsy, which is an e-commerce website focused on handmade and vintage items. The Appel Shop is the store I came across on Etsy. It is a family owned wood shop specializing in handcrafted furniture, art, and decor. Not only did I find exactly what I was looking for, but I also found a wood shop with a cool story.
At the Appel Shop, Tyler does all of the design, woodworking, and communication, while his wife, Lindsey does the art and keeps the three small ones alive during the day. Tyler started doing woodworking as a hobby and just built wood pieces for his own house and friends. That is until one day when he realized he could turn his hobby of woodworking into a career. Tyler and his family have now shipped over 1000 items all over the country.
I liked this story because it was relatable to my career. I started out filming weddings for close friends and family. Now I am in my fourth season in the wedding film industry and this season I already have twenty booked! This shows that if you love doing something, push yourself to build something out of it. You never know, your hobby or side hustle could turn into something much bigger when you put in the work!
My overall experience with the Appel Shop was fantastic. Right after I clicked order on Etsy, I received a personal message from Tyler thanking me for my order and asking if I wanted any customizations done. Since my wedding season has started, I am currently busy working on several projects, and needed the desk ASAP...Tyler had the desk delivered within a week. The desk was in perfect condition and I can't be more happy with it. Thanks for reading this blog post. If you have a story or a favorite thing you like about a company you've ordered a desk from, connect with me to share it. As always, more stuff coming soon!
